Youth with juvenile legal involvement have high rates of unmet physical, developmental, and mental health needs as well as higher mortality rates and disparate poor health outcomes compared to the general pediatric population. The Health Equity in Youth Affected by the Carceral System SIG is dedicated to improving the healthcare of youth impacted by the carceral system, including the juvenile legal system, adult criminal legal system, and immigration detention system. The SIG will focus on evidence-based clinical practices, research, and education to advance health outcomes for this structurally vulnerable population.
The SIG aligns with the APA’s mission to enhance child health by supporting the academic development of professionals dedicated to improving the health of structurally vulnerable children. The SIG upholds the values of the APA such as health equity, collaboration, diversity, and inclusion, fostering mentorship and partnerships within the field. Furthermore, it aligns with APA goals by expanding professional development opportunities, investing in member growth to improve health systems and policies, and promoting equitable practices to effectively address and reduce health disparities.
Goals of the SIG:
- Raise Awareness: Enhance understanding within the APA community regarding the unique healthcare challenges faced by youth with juvenile legal involvement or affected by the carceral setting.
- Foster Collaboration: Encourage cooperation among pediatricians committed to the well-being of justice-involved youth.
- Promote Research: Advance research on various pediatric health issues affecting these youths, including primary care, mental health, chronic conditions, and infectious diseases.
- Advocate for Policies: Support the development and implementation of policies that ensure access to quality healthcare for justice-involved youth and youth affected by the carceral setting.
- Provide Education: Offer educational resources and training opportunities for trainees, pediatricians, and healthcare providers in academic, community, and juvenile carceral settings.
