The Young Investigator Awards Program supports early career investigators interested in pursuing a long-term career in research and academic medicine with a focus on enhancing the health and well-being of all children, particularly those most vulnerable. The YIA Program seeks to support a diverse cohort of early career investigators - in both lived experience and academic institution.
The Young Investigator Awards Program offers three funding paths for prospective applicants - Read about each path below:
- Academic Pediatric Association Young Investigator Award (APA YIA)
- Academic Pediatric Association Research Network Young Investigator Award (APA Research Network YIA)
- Nutrition in Underserved Communities Young Investigator Award (Nutrition YIA)
Additional Trainee Engagement Funding: Applicants invited to submit a full proposal may request consideration for an additional $5,000 in funding by including a trainee (e.g medical student or resident) engagement plan. The plan should describe the trainee’s role in the project, the activities they will complete, how they will be mentored, and, when feasible, how they will be encouraged or supported to attend the annual PAS Meeting.
Letters of Intent (LOI) or Initial Proposals are being accepted June 1 - October 1, 2026.

- Select your Funding Path and ensure you are within the eligibility requirements of your selected Funding Path.
- Confirm that both you and your Primary Mentor are current members of the Academic Pediatric Association
- Review the Initial Proposal Checklist for detailed application instructions
A panel, convened by the APA Research Committee Chair, will review initial submissions and select Principal Investigators (PIs) who will be invited to submit full proposals.
Incomplete submissions and application materials that exceed the requested page limits will NOT be considered for review.
Full Proposal
Those who receive an invitation to submit a full proposal will be notified directly with access to the submission portal and a reminder of the deadline.

- Review the comments that were provided to you during the Initial Proposal review.
- Review the Full Proposal Checklist for detailed application instructions
- Applicants may request consideration for an additional $5,000 in funding if the full proposal includes a meaningful role for a trainee (e.g. medical student or resident) in the project. For example, the additional funds can be used to support additional analyses by the trainee and their attendance at the PAS meeting.
- To be considered for this additional funding, the proposal must describe the trainee’s role in the project, how the trainee will be engaged in the work, the specific responsibilities or activities the trainee will complete, how the trainee will be mentored, and, when feasible, if and how the trainee will be supported or encouraged to attend the annual PAS Meeting.
A second study section, convened by the APA Research Committee Chair, will review and score the full proposals, and prepare a summary review to be sent to each PI. Funding decisions will be based on the results of the study section review. The number of proposals selected for funding will be determined by the funds available for the given year. The awardees will be announced at the annual Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting.

Proposal Review Criteria
- Alignment of proposal with the APA mission as well as the YIA's mission of supporting research that enhances health equity for children
- Alignment of proposal with selected funding path
- Primary Mentor engagement with proposal
- Study design and innovation
- Study feasibility
- Potential for project to launch career of applicant
- Potential for project to contribute to evidence base/gap in literature
- Diversity of applicant lived experience and institution
- Likelihood of applicant's ongoing involvement with the APA
- If requesting the additional trainee-focused funding, strength and feasibility of the trainee engagement plan, including the resident’s role, responsibilities, mentorship, and potential participation in the annual PAS Meeting.
Proposals that do not focus on under-served populations or include research on health disparities will be at a significant disadvantage in review.
Applicants submitting more than one proposal must understand that only one of their submitted proposals will move forward towards funding consideration.
Submitted proposals should describe research that, with Young Investigator Award funding, will allow the recipient to advance their career in a topic they are passionate about exploring. Proposals should only include aims that require award funding. Do not include aims for which award funding is not needed.
Aims and methods presented in proposals should be those that require funding by the YIA Program. Other relevant components of the project can be described elsewhere in the proposal.
Young Investigator Awards will be given with the understanding that the project is initiated and completed within 1 year. Projects kick off at the annual Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting and are expected to close by the following PAS Meeting.
All awardees are encouraged to submit abstracts from their projects to a PAS Meeting and to submit a manuscript summarizing the project results to the APA Journal, Academic Pediatrics, for possible publication. The APA and YIA Program should be acknowledged in all presentations and publications.
