The Advancing Pediatric Leaders program is recruiting educators to serve as faculty/faculty coaches for the program. Advancing Pediatric Leaders (APL) is a 2-year program designed to advance the leadership competencies of mid-career academic pediatric health professionals.
Unique features of the program:
- One-on-one coaching: Regularly scheduled conversations with a faculty coach focused on participant’s growth and vitality as a leader
- Peer group coaching: Sessions that enable participants to practice a coaching approach to provide guidance related to work on their leadership initiative/challenge
- Interactive, hybrid curriculum:
- Monthly virtual sessions beginning in January of 2025
- Face-to-face sessions at PAS 2025 and 2026
- Experiential, hands-on application of learning through work on a leadership initiative/challenge
- Networking: Intentional programming to allow participants to showcase their work, increase their visibility, and augment and strengthen their professional network

APL Faculty are expected to:
- Participate in faculty orientation session with program leaders in late November/early December 2024
- Commit to engage in monthly faculty meetings and professional development sessions for coaches beginning in January 2025
- Attend full day programming at PAS in 2025 (Year 1) and 2026 (Year 2)
- Teach sessions in the curriculum (face-to-face programming at PAS meetings and intersession webinars)
- Facilitate group coaching sessions with APL participants
- Coach assigned program participants in individual coaching sessions throughout the duration of the program
- Provide feedback to participants during the work in progress poster session and end of program virtual session during which participants’ will present their projects
APL Faculty Eligibility Criteria:
Mid-career or senior faculty who:
- Are current APA members
- Have experience/expertise in faculty development/teaching
- Have experience/expertise in coaching/mentoring faculty colleagues
- Have a demonstrated commitment to inclusive excellence
The term for faculty/coaches is 2 years, i.e. January 2025-December 2026, and can be renewed for a 2nd term.

APL Faculty FAQs
- Who selects the faculty and how many faculty will be selected?
- A selection committee comprised of current faculty members will select new faculty members.
- What are the expectations for faculty members?
- Faculty are expected to teach in the face to face and virtual learning experiences for the participants and to engage in professional development to prepare them to serve as coaches for participants throughout their term in the program.
- How many participants will I work with as a coach?
- Each faculty member will be assigned to work with/coach 3 participants throughout the program. Individual coaching sessions will be scheduled between the coach and each coachee at regular intervals throughout the program.
- Do I need to attend the APL sessions at PAS?
- Faculty are expected to attend all of the programming (face to face sessions) on the Friday of the PAS meeting in 2025 (Hawaii) and 2026 (Boston). Faculty are also expected to attend all of the virtual sessions for participants; even those that they are not leading to serve as facilitators for small group activities and group coaching sessions.
- How long is the commitment if I am selected to be a faculty member?
- Faculty will be expected to serve in the role of faculty/coach for 2 years (January 2025-December 2026), attend orientation with program leaders, and engage in monthly faculty meetings/professional development sessions for faculty.
