Michael S. Ryan, MD, MEHP

Michael S. Ryan, MD, MEHP is Professor of Pediatrics in Pediatric Hospital Medicine, Associate Dean for Assessment, Evaluation, Research and Innovation, and Director of the Center for Excellence in Education at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.

For the first 13 years of his career, Dr. Ryan worked at Virginia Commonwealth University/Children’s Hospital of Richmond, serving in various education leadership positions including: Pediatrics Clerkship Director, Associate Program Director for the Pediatrics Residency, Assistant Dean for Clinical Medical Education, and Vice Chair of Education. He received local awards for teaching excellence throughout the continuum of medical education and was recognized with the school-wide educational innovation/research award in 2016. In 2022, Dr. Ryan joined the faculty at the University of Virginia where he currently serves as Associate Dean.

At national and international levels, Dr. Ryan has been heavily involved in medical education leadership and education scholarship, with specific focus on CBME in UME. He has served on the executive, grants, DEI advisory, and nominations committees for COMSEP, the education executive, top articles, and various awards committees for the APA, and the RIME committee for the AAMC. He served as steering committee member and site PI for the AAMC’s Core EPA pilot for its duration (2014-2021) and was chair of the AMA’s CBME workgroup (2020-2022). He is currently serving a term as chair-elect/chair for APEX after serving as faculty since 2015. He is adjunct faculty for the MEHP program at Johns Hopkins where he teaches education scholarship and serves as a thesis supervisor. Dr. Ryan has written >60 peer-reviewed publications and has received grant funding for education research through the AMA, COMSEP, GEA, and NBME-Stemmler. He has received several major awards for teaching and education research including the APA’s junior faculty teaching award (2016) and COMSEP’s research and scholarship award (2024).

Dr. Ryan was born in Chicago and grew up in northern New Jersey. He received his BS from Virginia Tech, his MD from Loyola University Chicago, completed Pediatrics residency training at the University of Chicago, and obtained his MEHP from Johns Hopkins University. He is currently a PhD candidate at Maastricht University (Netherlands) where his dissertation focuses on competency decisions in medical school.
