Katherine E. Mason, MD
Katherine (Kathy) Mason is Professor of Pediatrics, Vice Chair of Education in the department of Pediatrics, and the Assistant Dean for Faculty Development at Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She is an active pediatric intensivist at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in R.I.
Kathy is a graduate of the Educational Scholars’ Program of the APA (Cohort 6) and continues to provide regional and national mentoring for that program. Mentoring is a large focus of her academic contributions; she is an active mentor through APA, APPD and the national Pediatric Critical Care Guardians program, as well as at her home institution. Kathy is the chair elect of the Vice Chairs’ Executive committee of APPD and a past Chair and member of the Fellowship Executive Committee.
She is deeply honored to be the 2021 recipient of the Robert S. Holm Leadership award of the APPD. She has been the recipient of numerous teaching and leadership awards over her career.
Kathy continues to promote best care to patients and families through research in team performance, communication in end of life care, and other contemporary clinical critical care topics. The bulke of her scholarly work and research focuses on Faculty Development subjects inclusive of best practices in facilitating learning and drivers of faculty and learner career development and engagement. She is interested in the discernment of evidenced-based ways to advocate for clinician educator performance, recognition, and well-being within academic systems; with a particular focus on ensuring that those from historically underrepresented groups in academic leadership are inspired and supported to contribute and thrive.
