The Newborn SIG is excited to host a fall webinar on the car seat challenge in the Level 1 newborn nursery. Using a classic case from the newborn nursery, a panel representing different pediatric specialties will discuss the history of the car seat challenge in the U.S., the existing evidence base around the car seat challenge, regional practice differences, and sub-specialty involvement for repeated failed car seat challenges, with goal to guide inpatient and outpatient newborn providers in navigating the evolving practice landscape on this topic.
The panel is comprised of:
- Dr. Benjamin Hoffman, MD FAAP CPST-I – Professor of Pediatrics at Doernbecher (DORN-BECKER) Children’s Hospital at Oregon Health and Science University and nationally recognized expert in child injury prevention
- Dr. Brian King, MD, BIDMC – Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Neonatologist at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center whose scholarship focuses on improving the value of neonatal care through economic evaluations and studies exploring resource utilization and practice variability
- Dr. Denis Donovan, MD – Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiologist at Weill Cornell Medicine and New York-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital whose clinical interests and scholarship on general preventive pediatric cardiology, acute care cardiology, exercise stress testing, and patient and parent experience for children with congenital heart disease.
Learning Objectives of the Webinar: By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:
- Review the evidence behind the adoption and evolution of car seat challenge testing.
- Summarize evidence supporting and questioning routine car seat challenge testing.
- Describe the role and limitations of echocardiography and other diagnostic testing following a failed car seat challenge, including findings that may or may not warrant further cardiovascular evaluation.
- Describe the impact of car seat challenge testing on infant safety, hospitalization, healthcare utilization, and caregiver education.
- Apply current evidence to clinical practice and institutional policy discussions.
