RAPID Scholar Awards

General Award Information

1. What is the official project period for the RAPID award?
   The official project period is:  May 1, 2027 – April 30, 2028. All awarded funds must be used within this project period, unless otherwise approved, but no-cost extensions may be requested, using the RAPID NCE Form.
2. Is a Grant ID assigned to the RAPID award?
   No. RAPID projects are not assigned individual Grant IDs.
3. What is the maximum amount of funding available through RAPID?
   Each RAPID Scholar may receive up to $15,000 in project funding, subject to approved budget categories and institutional requirements. Scholars may receive:

• • • Up to $15,000 for their approved RAPID project budget (based on the amount requested and approved)
    • Up to $2,000 in separate support for the 2026 PAS Meeting:
      • $1,000 for the RAPID Scholar
      • $1,000 for the institutional mentor
    • Up to $1,000 to support travel to the 2027 RAPID Conference

Therefore, the total potential funding available may be up to $18,000.

Conference and travel support funds are separate from the project budget and may only be used for their designated purpose. Unused Scholar travel funds revert to the RAPID Program, and may not be used for the project or other expenses. Unused mentor travel funds cannot be transferred to Scholars unless explicitly approved by RAPID leadership.

4. Can RAPID award funds be used for travel?
   Travel expenses must align with the approved project budget and RAPID guidelines. Additional travel support opportunities (such as PAS and RAPID Conference travel support) are offered separately, and costs cannot exceed $1,000 per person, per event.

Budget & Funding FAQs

5. What expenses are allowable under RAPID funding?
   Allowable expenses may include:
   • Research supplies
   • Participant incentives
   • Statistical support
   • Software/program licenses
   • Research-related travel (if approved)
   • Educational materials
   • Research assistant effort

All expenses must directly support the approved project aims.

6. What expenses are NOT allowable?
   Examples of unallowable expenses include:

• • Personal expenses
  • Unapproved equipment purchases
  • Investigator or salary support
  • Entertainment expenses
  • Expenses outside the project period
  • Publication costs (we strongly encourage Scholars to publish in reputable peer-reviewed journals that do not charge publication fees

6. Can I modify my approved budget?
   Possibly. Any significant budget modification must be reviewed and approved in advance by RAPID leadership and/or the appropriate grants administration office.
7. What happens if I do not use all awarded funds?
   Per RAPID policy, any unused funds remaining at the conclusion of the project period must be returned to RAPID and may not be retained or carried over, unless otherwise approved.
8. Are indirect costs (overhead/F&A) allowed under the RAPID Award?
   No. Budgets submitted for the RAPID Award should NOT include:

• • Indirect costs/overhead (F&A)
  • Salary support for the principal investigator (PI)
  • Salary support for the primary mentor
  • Equipment intended for long-term use (e.g., computers)

Under this societal grant structure, the National Institutes of Health only allow indirect costs for the prime recipient organization, which is the Academic Pediatric Association.

As outlined in the approved National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases budget, indirect costs are allocated exclusively to the APA. Therefore, indirect costs are NOT allowed for the PI or their institution. Please make that clear to your Grants & Contracts office, as well as the fact that they cannot subtract any indirect costs from your RAPID Award.

Please work closely with your grants office prior to proposal submission to ensure the RAPID budget complies with these requirements.

Research & Project Expectations

10. Do I need IRB approval before starting my project?
    Yes. Projects involving human subjects must obtain all necessary IRB approvals prior to participant recruitment or data collection.
11. Can I begin spending funds before approvals are finalized?
    No. Expenses should not be incurred until all required institutional approvals are in place.
12. Are Scholars expected to present their work?
    Yes. Scholars are required to present at the Annual RAPID Conference and must attend the entire Conference. Scholars are also required to submit an abstract for consideration for presentation at the annual Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS). Scholars additionally are encouraged to present at other national professional conferences.
13. Are institutional mentors required to participate?
    Yes. Institutional mentors are required to provide ongoing guidance and support throughout the project period and attend the PAS luncheon with the RAPID Scholar.

PAS Travel FAQs

14. Is PAS travel reimbursement separate from the RAPID project budget?
    Yes; it is separate from the $15,000 project budget.

      • $1,000 for the institutional mentor

15. What documentation is required for travel reimbursement?

Scholars must typically submit:

• • Itemized receipts
  • Completed reimbursement forms
  • Proof of conference attendance (if requested)

All reimbursement documents should be submitted as instructed by APA/RAPID leadership.

16. Can mentor travel funds be transferred to the Scholar?
    No. Mentor and Scholar travel support allocations are separate, and cannot be combined.

Communication & Administrative Expectations

17. How should Scholars communicate project updates or concerns?

Scholars should maintain regular communication with:

• • Their RAPID NAC mentor
  • Institutional mentor for the RAPID project
  • RAPID leadership
  • Program administration

Questions regarding budgets, timelines, approvals, or deliverables should be communicated promptly.

18. What happens if project timelines change?
    Any major delays, changes in scope, or challenges affecting the project should be communicated to RAPID leadership as soon as possible.

19. Are Scholars expected to complete surveys and evaluations?
    Yes. Completion of baseline surveys, evaluations, and program assessments is mandatory for RAPID Program reporting and future program development.

Proposal Guidelines

20. What is the difference between a Letter of Intent (LOI) and a Full Proposal?
    The Letter of Intent (LOI) is a brief overview of your proposed project and is used to determine whether the project aligns with the goals and priorities of the RAPID program. The LOI must be no more than two single-spaced pages, using Arial 11-point font with 1-inch margins. Applicants whose LOIs are selected will be invited to submit a Full Proposal.

The Full Proposal provides a more detailed and comprehensive description of the proposed project and must be no more than eight double-spaced pages. The Full Proposal expands upon the information presented in the LOI.

21. When will RAPID award funds be distributed?
    RAPID award funds will not be dispersed until the full proposal has been reviewed and formally approved by RAPID leadership/staff.

22. What should be included in the Full Proposal?

The Full Proposal should include:

• • A detailed project description
  • Specific aims and objectives
  • Methodology and anticipated outcomes
  • A detailed budget and justification
  • IRB status
  • Anticipated timeline (in graphic format)
  • NIH biosketches for the applicant and institutional mentor
  • A letter of support from the Department Chair (letters from the division or section chief are unacceptable)
  • An adversity statement
  • A signed statement that the applicant will attend ALL 12 mentoring Zoom meetings during the RAPID project period

23. Are Scholars required to submit a project timeline?
    Yes. The proposal must include a project timeline in either:

• • Graphic format
  • Gantt chart format

The timeline should demonstrate that the project can reasonably be completed within the one-year project period, and must include preparing and submitting a PAS abstract and preparing and submitting a manuscript for publication.

24. What mentor information should be included?
    The proposal should include a mentor letter that must include the mentor’s proposed role on the project, any grant support available to the applicant, any statistical or RA available to the applicant, and relevant research experience (such as current and prior R01 funding). The letter also must contain a table that lists:

• • All current and prior mentees, including their status at the time of mentoring (students, residents, fellows, or faculty)
  • The mentoring role (primary mentor, member of the mentoring team, etc.)
  • Specific scholarly products of the mentoring relationship, including poster, platform presentations, publications, grants, and awards)
  • The mentee’s current position and institution (i.e., assistant professor, fellow, private practice, etc.)

This information is used to assess mentorship track record and support structure for the Scholar. Not including such a table, or simply stating the number of prior mentees, will be considered non-responsive.

25. What happens when revisions are requested?
    RAPID leadership may request revisions or clarification prior to final approval and fund distribution, based on the proposal reviews by our NAC. Scholars are required to respond to revision requests in a timely and responsive manner. RAPID award funds will not be dispersed until the revised Full Proposal is approved by RAPID leadership. This will require addressing every weakness listed in a responsive fashion in a cover letter listing each critique, how it was addressed, and exactly where in the revised proposal the revision can be found (including page, paragraph, and line numbers). This should be accompanied by a Track Changes version of the revised proposal, and a clean copy.

Eligibility

Applicants should be:

• Faculty members no more than five years out from completion of all training (fellowship or post-doc)
• Fellows in the last year of fellowship

Previous RAPID Scholars and YIA recipients are not eligible to apply.

If applying for the Academic Pediatric Association (APA) pathway, please confirm that both the principal investigator, the RAPID applicant, and his/her chosen mentor(s) are current APA members; if applying for the other pathways, please confirm that both the principal investigator and his/her chosen mentor(s) are current members of those societies. Mead Johnson applicants must be members of one of the RAPID societal partners.

RAPID’s goal is to encourage and support individuals who have experienced significant adversity and challenges to pursue a research career in academic pediatrics, such as socioeconomic factors, growing up in rural areas, and other challenges, hardships, and unique life experiences. This will be judged by reviewing the applicant’s narrative regarding how societal factors have shaped the individual’s interests and preparedness to be a RAPID Scholar. Applicants must address their adversity, challenges, and unique life experiences in their application. If applicants have questions in this part of the submission, they can contact the directors for information.

Initial Proposals

The Call for initial proposals, Letters of Intent (LOI), is announced each August.

Please take care in reviewing the following steps before submitting an LOI:

• The proposed research project should have a timeline of one year.
• Select one or more Funding Paths
• Ensure you are within the eligibility requirements for a RAPID Scholar
• Confirm that both you and your chosen mentors are current members of the Academic Pediatric Association (or other supporting organization, based on selected funding path)
• Review the Initial Proposal Checklist for detailed application instructions

The RAPID National Advisory Committee (NAC) will review initial submissions and select applicants who will be invited to submit full proposals. Incomplete submissions and application materials that exceed the requested page limits will NOT be considered for review. The deadline to submit a proposal for 2026 awards has passed. The submission portal for 2027 awards will open in July 2026.

Full Proposal

Those who receive an invitation to submit a full proposal will be notified directly, with access to the submission portal.

The RAPID NAC will review and score the full proposals and prepare a summary review to be sent to each selected applicant. Funding decisions will be based on the results of the study-section review. The number of proposals selected for funding will be determined by the funds available in a given year. Awardees will be announced at the annual Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting.

Incomplete submissions and application materials that exceed the requested page limits will NOT be considered for review.
