Academic Pediatrics
Academic Pediatrics, the official journal of the APA, is a peer-reviewed publication that provides leadership in pediatric education, research, patient care, and advocacy. Content areas include pediatric education, emergency medicine, injury, abuse, behavioral pediatrics, holistic medicine, child health services, health policy, and the environment. Members receive print and online access to the journal. Faculty members can volunteer to review manuscripts and serve on the Editorial Board.
Awards
APA annually honors its members who contribute to the field of academic pediatrics through excellence in medical education, patient care and delivery, research, or policy and advocacy.
Faculty and Scholarship Development Programs
Advancing Pediatric Educator Excellence (APEX) Teaching Program
APEX is a one-year longitudinal program that offers junior faculty opportunities to learn educational theory and specific skills that they can apply at their institution with direct observation of teaching by a local mentor. Generalists and hospitalists who are looking to advance their clinical teaching skills can apply.
Educational, Research, and Quality Improvement Scholars Programs
APA is home to several three-year national faculty development programs for pediatric academicians who wish to develop skills in scholarship and leadership. Junior faculty members can apply for a Scholars Program that focuses on education, research or quality improvement science. Programs host annual conferences prior to the PAS meeting each year and scholars are expected to present their research at PAS upon program completion. Each program has a unique curriculum and leadership.
Funding Opportunities
Junior faculty members can apply for a $10,000 Young Investigator Award grant to fund a research project. The application process is a great way to prepare for an early career research award.
Leadership
Committees
Junior faculty can join and provide thought leadership on one of APA’s numerous committees. All committees advance the goals of the Association and meet via teleconference.
Special Interest Groups
Junior faculty can join and lead one of APA’s Special Interest Groups (SIGs). SIG Chairs facilitate discussion among its members throughout the year and plan the annual educational session at PAS. SIGs are an excellent way to immediately expand your network among colleagues interested in similar areas of academic general pediatrics.
Regions
Junior faculty can join and lead their APA Region. Region Charis facilitates professional development, mentoring and networking among its members throughout the year and plan the Region’s annual meeting. Regions are an excellent way to gain national leadership experience.
Membership
The APA is excited to share pediatric residency programs can enjoy special membership rates to enroll all residents in the APA.
Mentorship
APA mentorship programs facilitate national relationships to give you access to career advice outside of your institution. Junior faculty can get direction annually at the Speed Mentoring event at PAS or seek career advice through connecting with senior leaders in APA’s Community. Additionally, junior faculty can provide direction to trainees at the PHM meeting and to New Century Scholars.
Networking
Faculty members can connect with colleagues across the country via the APA Connect App or APA’s Community.
APA’s Community
APA’s Community boasts more than 40 Special Interest Group (SIG) and 10 Region discussion forums enabling leaders to exchange information about the latest academic and clinical trends. Members can share resources and collaborate on these dynamic and interactive forums.

Professional Development
Develop Your Career in PHM Conference
Junior pediatric hospitalists can attend the half-day Develop Your Career in Pediatric Hospital (PHM) Medicine leadership conference the day before the PHM Meeting. Experienced leaders in PHM facilitate networking and educational sessions that will arm you with the knowledge you need to outline your roadmap to career success.
National Meetings
Junior faculty get discounts to attend APA’s annual national meetings including the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) Meeting and the Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) Meeting. Members can also submit an abstract and present their research at the meetings.
Regional Meetings
APA’s 10 regions host annual meetings. Each meeting features a call for abstracts and workshops, giving trainees the opportunities to present their research and gather the feedback they need to advance their research. APA membership includes Region membership.
Research Networks
The APA is home to three practice-based research networks. Junior faculty can participate in nation-wide studies, serve on the executive leadership committees and conduct research through the networks by proposing studies.
