The New Century Scholars Resident Mentoring Program, currently sponsored by the Academic Pediatric Association, the American Board of Pediatrics, the American Pediatric Society, the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology and the Society for Behavioral and Developmental Pediatrics* (which sponsors one scholar each year), is a mentorship initiative designed to foster greater representation and opportunity within academic pediatrics.
*The Society for Behavioral and Developmental Pediatrics scholarship includes complimentary attendance at the SDBP Annual Meeting.
Program Need
- Persistent gaps in child health outcomes and healthcare access remain a pressing concern, especially as the pediatric population becomes increasingly diverse.
- One strategy for addressing these challenges is to strengthen the academic pediatric workforce by ensuring it reflects the rich variety of backgrounds and lived experiences present in the communities it serves.
- Providing mentorship and visible role models to pediatric trainees at critical decision points helps support a more inclusive and representative future in clinical care, teaching, and research.
