Marta King, MD, MEd

Marta King, MD, MEd is passionate about advancing medical education through innovation, program development, process improvement, coaching, mentoring, and scholarship.

Dr. King is a Professor of Pediatric Hospital Medicine at St. Louis University School of Medicine. An avid innovator, Dr. King led a grant funded multicenter study focused on development of a medical documentation assessment rubric (P-HAPEE) now adapted by numerous institutions both in the US and internationally. During her tenure as Director of Medical Student Education in Pediatrics at Saint Louis University, Dr. King facilitated implementation of fourteen new electives and numerous novel programs including the first objective structured clinical exam involving pediatric patients at St. Louis University; workshop style orientation; academic half day, as well as quality improvement assignment and discussion.

A deeply committed mentor, Dr. King is a co-founder of Advancing Pediatric Educator eXcellence (APEX): an award winning national faculty development program in existence since 2017 with more than 100 alumni. The program’s unique educational model and curriculum has since been adapted to pediatric hospital medicine fellows as well as pediatric faculty in specialties outside of pediatric hospital medicine. Throughout her tenure as faculty at three medical schools, Dr. King guided over a hundred students in deliberate career planning and projects involvement. A nationally recognized leader in medical education, Dr. King is a member of the Pediatrics in Review editorial board and faculty in the Academic Pediatric Association Educational Scholars Program. She speaks regularly on the topics of clinical reasoning, scholarship in education, and resilience. Two of her first author manuscripts have been recognized among top ten publications of the year in medical education and in pediatric hospital medicine. A firm believer in life-long learning and continuous personal and professional growth, Dr. King completed her medical degree, pediatric residency, masters in medical education, quality improvement science training at the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. She is currently pursuing advanced quality improvement training as well as coach training.

With her unique combination of passion and expertise in clinical care, medical education, quality improvement science, and coaching Dr. King aspires to continue facilitating effective, innovative, learner-centered education for the benefit of students, residents, faculty, and ultimately patients and families.
