Teri Turner
Teri L. Turner, MD, MPH, MEd is a tenured Professor of Pediatrics and Assistant Dean of Graduate Medical Education at Baylor College of Medicine, where she also serves as Vice Chair of Educational Affairs and holds the Martin I. Lorin Endowed Chair in Medical Education.
Dr. Turner received her undergraduate degree from Oklahoma State University and earned her medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. She completed her pediatric residency and Academic General Pediatrics fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine. During her fellowship training, she earned a Master of Public Health from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and later completed a Master of Education at the University of Houston, reflecting her longstanding commitment to advancing medical education as a scholarly discipline.
Over nearly three decades, Dr. Turner has become a nationally and internationally recognized leader in medical education. She founded and directed the Center for Research, Innovation, and Scholarship in Medical Education for the Department of Pediatrics and is recognized for her expertise in adult learning theory, curriculum development, instructional design, and competency-based medical education. Her work has led to the development of numerous local and national educational programs, including the widely disseminated Clinician–Educator’s Handbook and the nationally recognized LEAD (Leaders Evaluating and Addressing Disparities) Residency Program.
Dr. Turner has taught across the full continuum of medical education, working with medical students, residents, fellows, faculty, and international educators. She has delivered numerous invited national and international lectures and peer-reviewed workshops and has authored an extensive body of educational scholarship focused on teaching, assessment, and faculty development. She has contributed to national and international initiatives through service on organizations including the American Board of Pediatrics Competency-Based Medical Education Committee and the International Competency-Based Health Professions Education Collaborators, helping advance assessment and training across health professions education.
Her educational leadership portfolio includes extensive service across the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Academic Pediatric Association, the Association of Pediatric Program Directors, and Pediatric Academic Societies. She recently served as President of the Academic Pediatric Association and previously co-chaired the International Conference on Residency Education, reflecting her sustained national and international engagement in medical education.
Dr. Turner’s teaching and educational leadership have been recognized with numerous honors, including the American Academy of Pediatrics Education Award and multiple Baylor College of Medicine Fulbright & Jaworski Faculty Excellence Awards in education, leadership, research, and enduring educational materials. Many of her former trainees and mentees now serve as program directors, educational leaders, and scholars across academic medicine, extending the reach of her work through the next generation of clinician-educators.
Across her career, Dr. Turner has focused on advancing the science and practice of medical education while supporting the development of educators and leaders across the continuum of training. Through mentorship, scholarship, and collaborative leadership, she continues to shape learning environments, programs, and professional communities that emphasize growth, reflection, and continuous learning as foundations for excellence in health professions education.
