The mission of the APA’s Hospital Medicine SIG is to advance the field of Hospital Medicine within the APA and nationally by working closely with the two other societies that support Pediatric Hospital Medicine (American Academy of Pediatrics and the Society of Hospital Medicine).
Annual Summary
At last year’s PAS Conference in Honolulu, the APA Hospital Medicine SIG hosted Making Lemonade Out of Lemons: Adapting the Future of PHM to Residency Changes, held on Friday, April 25, 2025 (12:30–2:00 PM) in Convention Center Room 313 C. Featuring panelists Dr. Elizabeth Kuhn, Dr. Neha Joshi, Dr. Kirsta Birnie, and Dr. Rachel Peterson, the session drew a full room and a highly engaged audience. Panelists shared diverse perspectives on the evolving pediatric hospital medicine workforce, highlighting how different programs are adapting to residency training changes and shifting workforce needs. The discussion generated robust audience participation and underscored the importance of innovation, flexibility, and shared learning across institutions.
Building on the momentum and themes from that session, the APA Hospital Medicine SIG will host Innovation in PHM: Digital Tools and AI — Breakthroughs and Missteps on Friday, April 24, 2026, from 4:00–5:30 PM at this year's upcoming PAS conference in Boston. This session will explore how digital tools and artificial intelligence are shaping pediatric hospital medicine, examining both promising innovations and important lessons learned, as the field continues to evolve.
APA Pediatric Hospital Medicine Taskforce
HM SIG Co-Chairs Drs. Shaughnessy and Andrews have recently joined this new taskforce. This task force was created by the APA to help develop a comprehensive and long-term strategy to proactively support the career development of pediatric hospitalists.
The Consortium of Pediatric Hospital Medicine
Consortium of Pediatric Hospital Medicine (CPHM)
CPHM is a group comprised of representatives from the three organizations sponsoring PHM (APA, AAP, and SHM). CPHM seeks to provide a unified home for PHM and its key stakeholders. Dr. Solan (APA SIG Co-Chair) is currently the Chair of CPHM (term Aug 2018-July 2019) and Dr. Erin Shaughnessy (APA SIG Co-Chair) is a member. Dr. Annie Andrews (APA SIG Co-Chair) will rotate on as a member on July 2019 and Dr. Solan will rotate off. CPHM funds 2 Council of Pediatric Subspecialties (CoPS), representatives. Dr. Karen Jerardi is a representative who represents the PHM Fellowship Directors (term 2017-2019) and Dr. JoAnna Leyenaar is the other representative for the larger PHM community (term 2018-2021). The PHM Fellowship Directors will be appointing a new rep this summer with plans to serve a 2-year term. CPHM assisted in selecting society representatives to the Choosing Wisely panel led by Dr. Ricardo Quinonez and supported by SHM. From the APA, we chose 3 members each from those who met desired qualifications (Drs. Michael Tchou, Amanda Schondelmeyer, and Barrett Fromme). SHM and AAP similarly chose 3 reps and utilized the same process. CPHM also funds 2 PHM representatives to serve on the planning committee for the PAS Meeting. Current representatives are Dr. Tamara Simon (term 2017-2020) and Dr. Derek Williams (term 2018-2021). Other activities that the CPHM will be involved in for this coming years is potential development/discussion of PHM specific questions for US News and World Report, re-assessment of how the PHM meetings are planned from year to year and creation of task force to inform additional pediatric-specific survey questions for the Practice Analysis Committee survey created by SHM.
