The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson (CoM-T) invites inquiries, nominations, and expressions of interest for the role of Chair, Department of Pediatrics. Reporting directly to Dean Michael M.I. Abecassis, the chair will also serve as the Director of the Steele Children’s Research Center and the Physician-in-Chief of the Diamond Children’s Medical Center.

In 2015, Banner Health and the University of Arizona Colleges of Medicine partnered through an academic affiliation agreement establishing a robust academic clinical partnership, integrating research, education, and patient care across its academic medical centers in both Tucson and Phoenix. CoM-T’s stated mission is “to advance the health and wellness of our community and beyond, in the relentless pursuit of excellence, through innovation across our tripartite mission – education, research, and patient care”. CoM-T consists of 17 clinical departments, 5 basic science departments, and 7 centers. In addition, there are over a dozen related centers that form part of the University of Arizona’s Health Sciences, a statewide leader in biomedical research and health professions training that also include the College of Medicine – Phoenix, and Colleges of Nursing, Pharmacy and Public Health.

The Department of Pediatrics currently includes over 120 faculty members and approximately 60 residents in its ACGME-accredited residency programs. The department is actively engaged in activities across the tripartite mission of research, education, and clinical care, coupling strong academic and clinical initiatives, and is considered a vital local and regional leader in child health programs. With outstanding support, partnerships, and collaborations within both CoM-T and Banner-University Medicine-Tucson (BUM-T) as well as with 20 other colleges within the university, the next chair will have the opportunity to boldly advance the department, building on a strong foundation, taking it to the next level across all its mission areas thus impacting the lives of children in Arizona and beyond.

The successful candidate will be an academic physician with a national reputation and a substantial record of research, education, clinical, and administrative accomplishments. They will have the knowledge and ability to effectively lead physicians and other health professionals, researchers, and educators while embracing the values of quality and financial sustainability. Candidates must have the leadership experience required to oversee a busy clinical department. Integrity, intellect, the ability to work collaboratively with numerous stakeholders, and a vision of how a modern academic department of pediatrics thrives in an age of health reform are essential. Last but certainly not least, the successful candidate will have experience with philanthropic and other fundraising activities.
