| Communications Director's Message |
This issue of the APA Focus is focused on information about the 50th Anniversary and the PAS Annual Meeting.
It's always hard for me to choose what I liked best at the meeting. But this year, for me, the highlight had to be the Presidential Plenary and 50th Anniversary celebration. What could be better than a mixture of excellent science, awards for exemplary service to children, reflections on the past and predictions of the future, along with the flood of light and joyful music in the beautiful atrium, all surrounded by colleagues and friends?

| President's Message |
I feel quite privileged to serve as the President of the Academic Pediatric Association for this upcoming year. The APA has been an integral part of my professional development and my hope is that all of our members will benefit from their affiliation.
What a wonderful 50th anniversary APA celebration at the PAS meeting in Vancouver! The meeting remained exciting from the welcoming session, the invited science programs, excellent abstract, poster and workshop presentations, the entertaining and informative debate, to the Presidential Plenary Session with scientific abstracts, memorable presentations by renowned colleagues, the Oral History project and even a Canadian marimba band!

Message |
As I start the year as President-Elect, I wanted to reflect on one of the great strengths of the APA: nurturing our young members. Ours is an organization whose focus has always been on the next generation of leaders, and I hope to help continue that tradition over the next three years. Almost every activity of the APA is geared towards the professional growth of our members, making it hard not to talk about every aspect of what our organization does when describing our focus on young members, but let me mention a few highlights:

The Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting of 2010 in Vancouver, Canada is concluded. The APA participated in a first ever Opening Session of the four sponsoring organizations (APA, APS, AAP, SPR), held its Membership Meeting to update the membership on the myriad of activities of the association, and participated with good humor in the APA Debate on Health Care Reform comparing the systems in the United States and Canada. This year saw a record number of abstract and workshop submissions so attendees had a plethora of scientific sessions to choose from. The Convention Center housing the meeting overlooked the magnificent Vancouver Harbour (seen in the background in the photo below) and was the setting for the APA Presidential Plenary and the 50th Anniversary Celebration. And, what a celebration it was.

| Secretary's Message |
This newsletter submission has been a most bitter-sweet one to write as it will be my last as APA Secretary. It has been a wonderful 7 years in this position and a definite challenge following in my predecessor, Paul Young's, shadow. He was a great mentor providing invaluable insight into the planning complexities of the PAS meetings, which in the past has been a major focus of the secretary's attention.
