The vice chair of Diversity and Inclusion of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center will promote cultural awareness and provide leadership for diversity and inclusion initiatives across the department’s clinical, research and teaching missions. This individual will report to the chair of the Department of Pediatrics and work closely with the chair, department administration and other institutional diversity leaders.
• Provide professional development opportunities for faculty and administrative staff on issues pertaining to diversity, equity and inclusion.
• Serve as content expert on diversity, equity and inclusion, remaining up to date on best practices and new developments and keeping departmental leaders apprised.
• Work collaboratively with the faculty and staff to expand cultural awareness skills and implement measurable improvements to the departmental environment.
• Work with training program directors to develop curriculum related to diversity, equity and inclusion.
• Work with search committees and department/division leaders to implement effective strategies to identify diverse faculty and staff candidates.
• Work closely with pediatric training program leaders to develop effective strategies to identify, retain and mentor diverse residency and fellowship trainees.
• Develop strategies to eliminate bias in screening and selection of candidates.
• Set goals of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEI&B) and develop programs/activities to accomplish those goals.
• Serve as a results-oriented catalyst to drive the change in cultural awareness throughout the department, inspiring colleagues to achieve new levels of expertise, confidence and cultural sensitivity.
• Build, augment and sustain strategic partnerships with the diverse populations, communities and organizations of Greater Memphis.
• Develop and monitor metrics appropriate for the department’s diversity and inclusion goals, including assessing the outcomes of programs, policies and services.
• Provide periodic progress reports to the department leadership and faculty.
• Other special projects to be determined in consultation with the chair.
Applicants for vice chair must be associate professor level or higher with experience building or managing programs or have demonstrated scholarship in this area that can translate to program building. The position will include clinical duties (within the scope of credentials). MD, DO, PhD or PsyD degrees are all acceptable.
