The role is that of medical director of the newborn nursery with over 6200 deliveries per year. Responsibilities include working with nursing leadership on quality and safety initiatives as well as collaborating with neonatologists and community pediatricians by leading the newborn committee.
Clinical duties include being a clinician-educator to residents and students in both the newborn nursery and as attending physician leading a team of pediatric and family medicine trainees on an 18-bed pediatric ward. A typical month includes 7-9 clinical days plus at-home night call approximately 5 times a month. There are opportunities to precept residents in ambulatory clinic as well. Other responsibilities include didactic teaching, mentoring, and opportunities for quality improvement projects. There are no delivery responsibilities.
The ideal candidate will be BC/BE in Pediatrics or Med/Peds, have a strong interest in the newborn nursery, possesses outstanding clinical skills, teaching expertise, and ideally at least 2-3 years of post-residency clinical experience or fellowship along with demonstrated leadership skills. Applicants are eligible for a faculty appointment at the UNC School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics at the assistant or associate professor level.
