DESCRIPTION:The ESP is a 3-year national faculty development program for academic pediatricians who wish to build their skills in educational scholarship and leadership. The program aims to teach scholars to develop\, implement\, evaluate and disseminate educational interventions or evaluation methods utilizing a rigorous process. DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event has closed.\nAbout\nThis is a fun and face-paced networking session designed to bring early career faculty and fellows together with mid-career and senior faculty. \nMentees will be assigned to a track and will have 10 minutes for one-on-one mentoring with mentors assigned to their track. After completion of the speed mentoring activity\, the entire small group (mentors and mentees) in each track will meet for a lively discussion of mentees’ short- and long-term goals. \nAdditional Information\nMentors are APA members who have been in an academic faculty position for 8-10 years or longer. \nMentees are APA members who are in fellowship or in their first 6 years of an academic faculty position. SUMMARY:COVID and LGBTQ Identity: How queer youth have coped with the last 12 months
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the LGBTQ+ Health and Well-Being SIG \nA conversation led by Dr. Tia Dole about how LGBTQ youth have reacted to and coped with the events of the last year. \nTia Dole\, Ph.D.\, is the Chief Clinical Operations Officer at The Trevor Project\, the world’s largest organization for suicide prevention for LGBTQ youth. Dr. Dole oversees all of The Trevor Project’s crisis services programs as well as our volunteer community on TrevorLifeline\, TrevorText and TrevorChat. \nShe is a licensed clinical psychologist and a long-time advocate for LGBTQ rights. She received her Master’s degree in Developmental Psychopathology from Columbia University (Teacher’s College)\, and she received a Fulbright Fellowship to study Forensic Psychology in Switzerland. She then completed her doctorate in clinical psychology at Fordham University. During the course of her studies\, Dr. Dole focused on LGBTQ people of color and early psychosis. One of her passions is normalizing mental health conditions within communities of color and helping people get access to services. \nPrior to coming to The Trevor Project\, she was formerly the Director of Psychological Services and Training at North Central Bronx Hospital and the Director of Training at Jacobi Medical Center. Dr. Dole is a published author and sits on several committees including The National Lifeline’s Lifeline Standards\, Training & Practices Committee and The Suicide Prevention Resource Center’s (SPRC) Steering Committee. DESCRIPTION:Are you finding it difficult to keep up with new technologies that could be helpful for your roles as a scholarly educator? In this round-robin workshop\, you will have the opportunity to learn ‘what’s new’ for the application of technology to a variety of areas relevant to your daily work. This workshop is designed for medical educators at all levels to learn about various technologies to enhance teaching and career advancement. \nSo\, grab your passport\, set your goals\, and join us on a tour highlighting educational technologies. Led by faculty and graduates of APA’s Educational Scholars Program experienced at applying technology to their academic study\, this workshop targets three areas of educational technologies: 1) Content creation (key considerations\, learning management systems\, and using online content on the fly)\, 2) Scholarship (tech tools for managing the medical literature\, conducting surveys\, and collaboration)\, and 3) Engagement (thinking beyond audience response to augmented reality\, virtual reality\, intelligent tutoring\, and serious educational games). \nYou will begin by taking a Technology Self-Assessment to reflect on your strengths and interests. Traveling in small groups through the three stations\, you will have opportunity to learn about these technologies. You will explore ways to use these technologies in your own work and consider how to make these efforts count towards your career advancement. SUMMARY:PAS Workshop: Implicit Bias – Providers Need Screening Too: Addressing the Impact of Implicit Bias\, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES)\, and Social Determinants of Health on Pediatric Providers
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nThe role of implicit bias in health disparities has been well-documented. Programming\, workshops and numerous curricula have been created to attempt to reduce bias as it relates to health care and clinical decision making. Recently\, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) incorporated the expectation that programs “…must incorporate social determinants of health of populations into the design and implementation of the program curriculum\, with the ultimate goal of addressing health disparities.” In addition\, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention delineated definitions and highlighted the importance of social determinants of health (SDoH) and adverse childhood experiences (ACES) on the health and well-being of children. Educating about these concepts is an important strategy but bypasses the critical need to address the impact of implicit bias\, ACES and SDoH of the providers who are actually providing the care to this pediatric patient population. \nThis action-oriented workshop will first describe key elements of delivering trauma-informed care with an understanding of the research behind social determinants of health and adverse childhood experiences. The participants will then have the opportunity to assess their own personal adverse childhood experiences and discuss that impact in their professional lives. \nNow armed with their own ACES and an understanding of the importance of patients’ ACES \, the participants will learn how to address implicit bias using the Crawford Bias Reduction theory which was created by one of the workshop leaders and used in numerous national trainings. A multi-model series of prompts will be used to engage the audience in the discussion of the model. The workshop will close with case scenarios that reflect clinical\, education and administrative challenges where the incorporation of the learned strategies can be incorporated and tested. \nObjectives: \n\nReview the role of origins and identity formation in the subsequent development of implicit bias\nDescribe the role of incorporating trauma­ informed care\, implicit bias and awareness of adverse childhood experiences\, social determinants of health in education for academic clinicians\nLearn strategies to reduce bias using the Crawford Bias Reduction theory\nDiscuss action-oriented responses and approaches using clinical\, administrative and educational examples\n\nFaculty: \nDr. Rhonda Acholonu @DrRGAcholonu \nDr. Dana Crawford @drdanacrawford \nDr. Suzette Oyeku @SuzettePediMD

SUMMARY:PAS Workshop: Navigating Success in Academic Medicine: A Workshop for Under-Represented in Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nSoon after successfully becoming an academic faculty member\, additional responsibilities or requests often arise for underrepresented in medicine (URiM) faculty. These additional requests or responsibilities include serving as a diversity representative or leader in their academic setting and the communities in which they live and work. This can lead to dilemmas and conflicts that extend throughout one’s academic career. Those who navigate these dilemmas successfully can realize the goals and aspirations that brought them to academic medicine. Those who do not successfully navigate these dilemmas can have difficulty with career satisfaction\, time management\, promotion\, and guilt. This interactive workshop is focused on development of skills to navigate this complexity successfully. SUMMARY:PAS Workshop: Get Involved! Advocacy Skill-Building and Visibility in an Academic Institution
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is geared towards novice physician advocates who are interested in translating their professional expertise to achieve a broader impact for child health. Using highly interactive\, real-time learning technology\, participants will define physician advocacy\, discuss the advantages of pediatrician advocacy\, and identify myriad ways that physicians are advocates. Next\, individuals will rotate through four simultaneous 20-minute hands-on small-groups led by advocacy experts. Each participant will gain the necessary skills to perform future self-directed advocacy work within their home institution and community. Physicians will then participate in an interactive discussion surrounding strategies for institutional and community buy-in and visibility. Facilitators with expertise in advocacy will assist with idea-sharing and brainstorming to identify key stakeholders within the academic institution who can promote and advertise academic work. The audience will further define academic products and outcomes to increase advocacy work visibility. SUMMARY:PAS Workshop: Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself! Mitigating Unconscious Bias During Residency and Fellowship Interviews
DESCRIPTION:Implicit bias is now recognized as a major contributor to health disparities. In light of this knowledge\, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has now mandated that residency programs to include implicit bias training for resident physicians . As residency programs develop unique and innovative implicit bias training programs\, little to no emphasis has been placed on faculty development about bias\, despite knowledge that most physicians hold implicit biases toward the patients they treat. This lack of emphasis is concerning\, as we now know from the 2014 CHANGES study studies that learners who are exposed to biased comments from attendings and faculty have increases in their implicit bias over time\, as measured by the IAT. The CHANGES study also highlights the importance of diversity in the clinical scenario: medical students exposed to black physician role models were more likely to have decreases in their implicit bias overtime. \nThis study highlights the need for a diverse physician workforce.
