SUMMARY:Pulling Back the Curtain on the Peer Review Process for National Professional Meetings: What Do I Need to Know and How I Can Use This Information to Write Abstracts That Will Be Selected?
DESCRIPTION:Description \nA cutting edge scientific meeting is dependent on skilled peer reviewers to aid in the development of a rigorous and stimulating program. Selection as a peer reviewer acknowledges the professional reputation of a faculty member and helps to provide evidence to support academic advancement and promotion. However\, few faculty receive training to learn how to do this important task. This workshop applies to participants from all disciplines and will focus on advancing skills to be an effective reviewer. The session will provide participants with an opportunity to gain insight into the PAS scientific abstract and workshop proposal review and selection processes as well as assist attendees in providing specific\, constructive feedback to colleagues who wish to disseminate their work in this venue. After an exercise to identify common challenges in reviewing and common writing pitfalls that may preclude an abstract from being accepted\, a brief didactic presentation will provide an overview of how to apply PAS reviewer instructions and scoring rubrics. The majority of the workshop will be devoted to interactive small group break-out sessions facilitated by workshop leaders during which participants will review and score de-identified and modified scientific abstract submissions and workshop proposals. Attendees will also have the opportunity to address the challenge of selecting proposals when narrative review comments are limited or too general or do not align with scoring determinations. Discussions will be summarized in a large group brainstorming activity to create tips for reviewing using the lessons learned from the exercises. Participants will leave equipped with the tools to be effective reviewers and with learning that they will be able to apply as they mentor others who are creating proposals for consideration in a peer-review process. \nLearning Objectives \n1. List challenges for reviewers and tips to enhance reviews of scientific abstracts and workshop proposals \n2. Describe the Pediatric Academic Societies abstract and workshop proposal review and selection processes \n3. Effectively review abstracts and proposals to provide specific\, constructive feedback to authors and data for program planners \n4. Apply lessons learned to mentor others who are creating proposal for consideration in a peer-review process \n  \nThis workshop is available to those registered for an all-access pass to PAS 2021.

SUMMARY:Journal Club: What's one thing you've learned today? Asking one simple question can enhance the educational content of your rounds
DESCRIPTION:Presented by APA’s Journal Club\nJune 10th at 12PM ET \nRetrieval practice – using quizzing and review questions to enhance learning – is an increasingly common strategy in health professions education\, and there is mounting evidence to support it. Most studies have only focused on using written questions to reinforce formal lectures\, though. The article we will discuss examines how we can apply this powerful technique to bedside clinical teaching on rounds; the authors found that a simple retrieval exercise at the end of rounds boosted trainees’ perception of the educational value of rounds. We will review the concept of retrieval practice\, discuss how it has been used in other contexts\, and explore the possible benefits of integrating it into rounds. \nArticle: \nCooper AZ\, Verbeck N\, McCallister JW\, Spitzer CR. Incorporating Retrieval Practice Into Intensive Care Unit Teaching Rounds: A Feasibility Study. J Grad Med Educ. 2020;12(6):778-781. \nDiscussants: \n\nAdin Nelson\, MD\, MHPE\, Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics\, Division of General Academic Pediatrics\, Weill Cornell Medicine and NYP-Komansky Children’s Hospital\, New York\, NY\nTeri Turner\, MD\, MPH\, MEd\, Professor\, Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education and Martin I Lorin Endowed Chair in Medical Education\, Section of Academic General Pediatrics\, Department of Pediatrics\, Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital\, Houston\, TX
