SUMMARY:APA Webinar: State-level DEI Laws and Policies
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, November 2 at 12:00 pm EST for a webinar on State-Level DEI Laws and Policies presented by the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Director of State Advocacy\, Omonigho Ufomata. \nThe June 29\, 2023 Supreme Court decision against Harvard and the University of North Carolina effectively ended affirmative action and race-conscious admissions practices in higher education. This decision left many academic institutions with ambiguity around how best to support admission of a diverse student body under the new decision. \nOmonigho Ufomata\, the director of state advocacy at the American Academy of Pediatrics\, will share a legislative landscape of current state-level laws around diversity\, equity\, and inclusion efforts\, challenges to DEI efforts\, and advocacy opportunities. \nThis session will be the first in a series of APA-sponsored events to help our members continue to navigate recruitment and retention of a diverse pediatrics workforce. \nPlease register below:

SUMMARY:APA Medical Education Journal Club- October
DESCRIPTION:Presented by APA’s Medical Education Journal Club \nOctober 2nd at 1:00pm ET \n“How do we help our trainees learn at the edge of their comfort zone?” \nAutonomy is a concept in medical education important for the development of physicians with the goal of full autonomy and unsupervised practice by the end of graduate medical education (GME) training. In order for trainees to gain autonomy\, supervisors must make entrustment decisions. Through reviewing this qualitative study\, we will take a look at trainees’ experiences with graduated autonomy and discuss how medical educators can help trainees capitalize on experiences that stretch them out of their comfort zone into the “zone of proximal development.” \nArticle: Anisha Kshetrapal\, Pim W. Teunissen\, Walter J. Eppich; Overextending: A Qualitative Study of Trainees Learning at the Edge of Evolving Expertise. J Grad Med Educ 1 June 2022; 14 (3): 295–303 \nDiscussants: \nMaheen Quadri\, MD\, MS Assistant Professor of Pediatrics\, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine\, Chicago\, IL. \nMary Beth Wroblewski\, MD\, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics\, Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine\, Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital\, St. Petersburg\, FL. \n  \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \nRegister Now! \n \nTo learn more about journal club\, go to: https://degnonassociates.instructure.com/enroll/6KCGGC \nCreate a log-in\, choose APA Medical Education Journal Club\, and get ready to engage!
