Pediatric Hospital Medicine 2012

Observation Care and Units - A Challenging Opportunity
Ryan Bode, Jodi Carter, Claudia Huett, Nancy Rush
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. State the existing literature regarding pediatric observation care
  2. Discuss billing and compliance issues related to observation care as outlined by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid
  3. Learn from each other including one institution's experience tackling observation care and successful creation of an Observation Unit
  4. Leave with a "toolkit" that will help you navigate observation care in your institution

Pediatric Observation Units have emerged to provide treatment of the rapidly evolving intersection of outpatient and inpatient care. Hospitalists have a critical opportunity to lead and staff these units. This workshop will start by gauging audience experience, knowledge and desired learning objectives. A brief literature review will follow specifically highlighting a recent systematic review of pediatric observation units. The bulk of the workshop will include interactive small work groups intended to address the challenges of observation care and units from assignment of patient status (observation vs. inpatient), physician billing and documentation, compliance and financial implications, creation and operations of an Observation Unit, and observation care outcome measures/dashboard. Facilitators will share their experience with observation care and the successful creation of an Observation Unit. A tool kit will be provided to all participants that they can use at their home institution including workshop presentation, referenced articles, and examples of documentation and coding tools, unit policies and outcomes dashboard.
