Pediatric Hospital Medicine 2012

Demonstrating Hospital Medicine Program Value
Patrick Conway, Doug Carlson, Vincent Chiang, Paul Hain
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Develop understanding of ways to measure hospital program value and the value chain in your health system.
  2. Learn methods for negotiating with your Chair/hospital/CEO based on program value
  3. Comprehend the policy and payment changes that will make delivering value and coordinated care, as opposed to volume of service, more important

The session is led by current and former Directors of Hospital Medicine with a range of experience. This workshop will begin with a discussion, including question and answer, on ways to measure value of hospital medicine programs and how to develop a program valued by your hospital administration. We will outline tactics for negotiating with your hospital CEO/leadership and Department Chair. We will also summarize major shifts in payment policy that will increasingly reward value and coordination of care and how hospital medicine programs can position themselves to add value to their health system. The second half of the workshop will be break-out groups in which participants develop their own plans and toolkits for how they would measure the value of their program, present this information to senior leadership, negotiate based on value, and position their program for future growth and success.
