Pediatric Hospital Medicine 2012

Urinary Tract Infections and Pneumonia: The 2011 Pediatric Guidelines
Kenneth B. Roberts; Samir Shah
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the recommendations in the new AAP Urinary Tract Infections
guidelines and the new IDSA Pediatric Pneumonia Guidelines
  2. Understand the key evidence behind recommendations in the new guidelines
  3. Identify challenges in developing a national guideline for pediatric care.
  4. Learn areas of needed research for improved care of children with pneumonia and UTI.

In 2011, two key guidelines were published that address conditions of interest to pediatric hospitalists. The American Academy of Pediatrics' guideline for the management of pediatric urinary tract infection, under the leadership of Dr. Kenneth Roberts, substantially overhauled older AAP recommendations. The Infectious Diseases Society of America, with the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society and under the co-direction of Dr. Samir Shah, published a major new national guideline for the management of pediatric pneumonia. In this opening session, Dr. Shah and Dr. Roberts will discuss the main elements of the new guidelines. They will address issues in these guidelines that challenge the status quo, and will speak to controversies and challenges behind the institution of these guidelines. They will touch on areas of future needed research. This will be a highly interactive session, and will be a valuable opportunity for hospitalists to directly discuss the guidelines and their utilization with the chairs of the guidelines committees.
