As the weather starts to cool off, please don't let your enthusiasm for upcoming APA events do the same! Remember that February 25-27, 2010 marks our annual Region VII and VIII combined meeting held in conjunction with the Southern Society for Pediatric Research. We will have a workshop entitled The Academic Breakfast Club--Peer Mentorship as a Model for Faculty Development, submitted by Jennifer Takagishi. We will also have original research abstracts presented in either poster or the oral presentation format on topics ranging from Medical Education and Ethics, Health Sciences Research, Clinical Epidemiology, and General Pediatrics/Adolescent Medicine. The meeting will be held at the Hotel Inter-Continental in New Orleans, Louisiana, and is particularly oriented toward trainees and their mentees.
We would also like to welcome our newest regional co-chair, Annamaria Church. Her three year co-chair position officially begins at Pediatric Academic Societies this upcoming May 1-4, 2010. For those of you who have not had the opportunity to meet Dr. Church, she completed her pediatric residency in 1982 when she combined her interests in general pediatrics, education and the growing field of child abuse and neglect. While practicing with a pediatric group, she also worked to develop a child protection team and taught residents and medical students both in the office and at the hospital. In 1990, she left private practice for a position as a continuity clinic director, associate residency program director and medical director of a hospital child protection team. In 1996, while continuing to be active in general and child abuse pediatrics, she became the director of the pediatric residency program at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. She remained a residency program director, general pediatric clinician and child abuse pediatrician first in Detroit and then in Grand Rapids Michigan for the next 10 years. In 2006 she moved to the southeast where she is now the director of the general pediatric division at TC Thompson Children's Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee. We hope you will welcome her aboard!
