This authoring module, called "The Nuts and Bolts of Scientific Writing," is designed to help scientific writers enhance the clarity and force of their scholarly documents. Effective writing takes hard work, but its benefits are apparent: it will help you to advance in your career, to share your ideas with others, and to organize and clarify your thinking. The module begins with the writing of good sentences, and then addresses combining sentences into effective paragraphs and groups of paragraphs.

  1. describe qualities of good scientific writing
  2. identify common writing faults that create barriers to a reader's understanding
  3. improve your skills for writing clear, concise and effective prose at the level of sentences, paragraphs, and sequences of paragraphs
