THE CONSULTATION VISIT

A consultation program has been developed by the Academic General Pediatric Fellowship Accreditation Committee (AGPAC) for those divisions or sections that are preparing to apply for accreditation but wish to do an assessment of whether their planned or existing fellowship program will meet the accreditation requirements. AGPAC's consultation team will provide advice on all aspects of the proposed academic training program with an emphasis on the three major domains of research, education, and career development. The clinical training component will also be reviewed. The goals and objectives related to clinical skills will be defined by the individual programs.

MATERIALS TO BE PROVIDED IN ADVANCE OF THE CONSULTATION VISIT

A completed Fellowship Program Description form should be sent to the designated consultation team a minimum of 2 weeks before the scheduled visit. Information needed to complete the form is included in the program requirements. Also refer to the core curriculum requirements and the goals and objectives .

If requested, a conference call will be arranged to answer questions as programs are preparing the fellowship program description form. A review of this form will help the consultation team to know where to focus their advice.

CONSULTATION VISIT PROTOCOL

The consultation team will be one or two members based on conversations with the section or division leadership. The team will arrive the afternoon before the visit. The section or division will set the schedule, including a dinner meeting the night before the visit. The next day, they will tour the facility and meet those involved in leading the proposed fellowship program. In general, consultations will be scheduled between September and May.

SUGGESTED TIME FRAME FOR CONSULTATION VISIT

We ask that you host a dinner for the consultation visitor(s) the night before the visit. The purpose of this dinner is to provide a chance for the fellowship program leader(s) and division or section leaders to get acquainted with the consultation visitor(s) and discuss informally the consultation visit plans and any challenges or opportunities that the program is facing.

ON DAY OF THE CONSULTATION VISIT

  • Brief tour of the facility
  • Meet with the program director or division director ~1.5 hrs
  • Meet with faculty ~1-2 hours
  • Meet over lunch with any current trainees (or if the fellowship program is just being developed) with the planning group
  • Meet with the chairman of the department ~ 30 minutes
  • Meet with the institutional GME director, if appropriate
  • At the end of the afternoon, reviewer(s) will take time to debrief and plan report
  • The site visit will be over by 5:00 pm.
