Winter 2008 Newsletter Article

Membership of the Executive Committee of the Research Committee now includes:
Membership of the Executive Committee of the Research Committee now includes: Benard Dreyer, Peter Szilagyi, Debra Bogen, Bill Cooper, Ruth Etzel, Glenn Flores, Jim Guevera, Donna Halloran, Larry Kleinman, Chris Landrigan, Iris Mabry, Janet Serwint, Shirley Russ, Karen Wilson, and Whitney Witt. The Executive Committee typically has monthly conference calls as well as subcommittees that work on individual activities throughout the year. Connie Mackay, the Associate Director of the National Office of the APA, has provided a great deal of support to the Executive Committee. Thanks Connie!

Please join us at our Annual Research Committee Meeting at PAS in Baltimore, May 2-5, 2009. Exact time and location will be listed in the PAS Program schedule.

Here are some of the present activities of the Research Committee:

Young Investigators Awards (YIA)

This year the APA has several different YIAs for young investigators to choose from:

  • The APA/AHRQ YIAs: These awards are given out yearly, 3-4 “general” awards funded by the APA that focus on all types of clinical and health services research, and 3-4 funded by AHRQ that focus more specifically on health service research projects using large national datasets or studying quality improvement. The awards are for up to $10,000. The YIA application and review process, as in previous years, is going through a multi-step process that the research committee is overseeing. The review process is underway.
  • Commonwealth Fund YIAs focusing on developmental and preventive outcomes of 0-5 year-olds: The Commonwealth Fund is funding a second round of YIAs this year in conjunction with the APA for projects that focus on developmental and preventive outcomes for 0-5 year olds as part of pediatric primary and "well-child" care. The program has a career development-mentoring component as well as support for research. The awards are for up to $15,000 of funding, and there is also a budget for a yearly meeting of the awardees, the leadership of the program, and their mentors (This year the meeting will be held at the Commonwealth Fund offices in NYC on January 26, 2009). Cynthia Minkovitz is leading this effort in conjunction with the chair of the research committee. This past winter-spring, the first round of these YIAs was awarded, after a two-step process similar to that utilized for the APA/AHRQ YIAs. There were 26 LOIs, of which 9 were chosen for full application, and 3 were awarded funding:

    • Jeanne Van Cleave: “Physicians’ Perspectives on a Recent Mandate to Use Standardized Assessment Tools to Screen for Developmental and Behavioral Problems in Massachusetts Pediatric Primary Care Practices” Institution: MassGeneral Hospital for Children Amount of funding: $15,000 National facilitator: Paul Dworkin
    • Nili Israeli: “Clinical Correlates of Internalizing Symptoms in Preschoolers”
Institution: Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Ctr
      Amount of funding: $5,000
      National facilitator: Dan Coury
    • Heather Paradis: “Innovative Delivery of Newborn Anticipatory Guidance:
The Incorporation of Media-Based Learning into the Primary Care Office”
      Institution: University of Rochester
      Amount of funding: $15,000
      National facilitator: Dina Borzekowski

The second round of funding is now under way. See below under MCHB-Funded Bright Futures YIAs.

  • MCHB-funded Bright Futures YIAs: The APA has received funding under the leadership of Judy Shaw for YIAs focusing on implementation of the Bright Futures guidelines. The first round of funding is under way and this year. It was decided to send out an announcement for the MCHB and Commonwealth Fund YIAs jointly (folks can only apply to one or the other, not both). Full proposals were due at the end of October and are being reviewed in November. Awardees of both programs will be invited to the January 26, 2009 meeting at the Commonwealth.
Mentorship of APA/AHRQ awardees:
The Research Committee, using the model of the Commonwealth YIA program, has decided to provide a national mentor for each of the APA/AHRQ awardees starting this year. Mentors will be chosen from the Research Committee as well as other senior researchers appropriate for the content area each awardee. Young investigators submitting full proposals will be notified that attendance at PAS is a requirement. A group meeting will be held with awardees during the PAS meeting in Baltimore, perhaps at the Health Services SIG or other venue.
Evaluation of the YIA Program:
Karen Wilson is heading up that evaluation. We are in the process of surveying previous awardees and unsuccessful applicants (all folks who submitted LOIs from 2002-2006) to determine the impact of the YIG program on their careers. Since the major goal of the YIG program is to support and promote the careers of young investigators, we think this evaluation will help access how successful it has been, and hopefully encourage additional funding. Connie Mackay has been extremely helpful in this project as well.
Reaching out to the Regions:
The Executive Committee of the Research Committee has sent an email letter to all regional chairs/co-chairs expressing our interest in collaboration, including:
  • Soliciting membership for the Research Committee from each Region
  • Surveying (either through existing regional surveys or through discussion) regional members regarding their research needs and sharing results with the Research Committee.
  • Inviting regional chairs/co-chairs to join our conference calls to find out more about the Research Committee
  • Asking regional leaders if they are interested in having us design research workshops that could be presented at their regional meetings.
  • If individual members have other ideas for collaboration with the Regions, please email ideas to me at bpd1@nyu.edu. We are looking forward to collaborating with Regions!
Research Networks
The Research Committee continues to work with Janet Serwint, who directs CORNET (Continuity Research Network), and Chris Landrigan, who directs PRIS (Pediatric Research in Inpatient Settings) to help support their important efforts.

Collaboration with SDBP Research Committee: Benard Dreyer attended the Research Committee of the SDBP and there was a discussion of possible collaboration between the two research committees. Bill Barbaresi, the former head of the SDBP Research Committee, has been appointed liaison to the APA Research Committee. Follow-up will include whether the two committees should sponsor joint workshops or other educational activities at the PAS.
Membership
If you have an interest in joining our committee, please contact me! All APA members are invited, from trainees to senior faculty. We have a monthly conference call during the year for our Executive Committee which is open to anyone interested in year long involvement, as well as subcommittees working on specific projects! If you are interested, or have any questions, contact me at bpd1@nyu.edu.
