New Quality Measures for Children with Medical Complexity

Rita Mangione-Smith

Objective 1:
Gain an understanding of the key steps involved in rigorous quality measure development

Objective 2:
Be able to name three challenges related to developing and implementing quality measures for children with medical complexity

Objective 3:
Gain familiarity with new quality measures available to assess quality of care for children with medical complexity

The development of robust pediatric-specific quality measures has been accelerated through the AHRQ/CMS sponsored Pediatric Quality Measurement Program (PQMP). These validated, freely available measures allow benchmarking of performance and local improvement, as well as provide standardized measures for use in a range of clinical and health services research. This session will focus on newly developed care coordination measures by the Center of Excellence on Quality of Care Measures for Children with Complex Needs – one of seven Centers that comprise the PQMP. These measures have broad applicability and raise critical issues about the current state of care for children with medical complexity.
