APEX Teaching Program

The Advancing Pediatric Educator eXcellence (APEX) Teaching Program scheduled July 23 & July 26 - San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter, provides the opportunity to advance your clinical teaching skills through a process of reflection, reconceptualization and active experimentation. Participants range from junior to more senior hospitalists. The program is timed at the beginning of the Pediatric Hospitalist Meeting focusing on a half-day of modules and a wrap-up at the end of the meeting. Candidates are expected to return the following year for final modules and a graduation dinner during Pediatric Hospitalist Meeting. There will be quarterly web-based sessions in the interim year. The APEX Teaching Program is co-sponsored by AAP Section on Hospital Medicine and the Academic Pediatric Association and endorsed by the Society of Hospital Medicine Pediatric Committee.

SPS Sedation Provider Course®
Scheduled for July 22, this is a one-day (8 hour) simulation course intended to provide pediatric sedation practitioners with the basic knowledge and core competencies that promote safe and effective procedural sedation to children. More specifically, the course has been designed to meet the needs of both experienced and novice sedation providers seeking both cognitive (didactic) and psychomotor (simulation) based education and training. The course focuses on patient selection and risk assessment (safety), general approach to procedural sedation, sedation monitoring, sedative drug pharmacology and the recognition and management of the more common sedation related adverse events.

As significant adverse events are relatively uncommon, this "hands-on" model of training is especially pertinent. To create the best possible learning environment and provide participants with maximum hands-on time, course size is limited to 12-24 participants. Round-trip transportation will be provided to the Children's Hospital of San Antonio Simulation Center from the Marriott Rivercenter.
