Pediatric Hospital Medicine 2012

Maximizing career satisfaction and longevity in pediatric hospital medicine
JoAnna Leyenaar, Lisa Capra
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Participants will become familiar with published research regarding determinants of career satisfaction among clinicians.
  2. Participants will become aware of potential means to maximize career tenure among pediatric hospitalists

The last decade has seen tremendous growth of the number and size of pediatric hospital medicine programs in the United States. Working across community and tertiary care settings, in academic and non-academic environments, pediatric hospitalist programs vary considerably in their scope of clinical and non-clinical work as well as work hours. Although a small number of studies exploring career satisfaction have been carried out among adult hospitalists, very little is known about the determinants of career satisfaction and tenure among pediatric hospitalists. In this workshop we will (i) review the literature about physician career satisfaction; (ii) discuss our ongoing mixed methods research exploring determinants of career satisfaction and tenure among pediatric hospitalists; (iii) discuss means of maximizing career tenure in pediatric hospital medicine, taking into account financial and other practice management considerations.
