Acute Kidney Injury - understanding the scope of disease and advancing the science of diagnosis
Rajit Basu
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the wide-ranging epidemic of Acute Kidney Injury in pediatrics
  2. Recognize the impact of Acute Kidney Injury in isolation and in multiple organ dysfunction
  3. Appreciate the impact of Acute Kidney Injury biomarkers and discuss the concept of renal angin

In this session, the underappreciated phenomenon of acute kidney injury will be highlighted and the impact of disease in pediatrics will be demonstrated. Literature evidence will be discussed regarding the deleterious effect of Acute Kidney Injury and the concept of illness "from" Acute Kidney Injury and not just "with" Acute Kidney Injury will be underscored. Novel diagnostic strategies, including Acute Kidney Injury biomarkers and renal angina, will be discussed.

Status Epilepticus - time to get aggressive
Rajit Basu
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain why seizures and status epilepticus are a priority impact disease in pediatrics
  2. Summarize the available evidence based medicine regarding management of status epilepticus
  3. Discuss the reasoning behind aggressive management of status epilepticus

In this session, the ubiquitous impact of children presenting with seizures and status epilepticus will be discussed, supporting its inclusion as a 'high-impact' disease. The paucity of evidence based data regarding management of refractory seizures will be reviewed and the imploration to be 'aggressive' with status epilepticus will be critically supported.
